Preserving the Night Sky in the Age of High-Brightness Projection
VEIL is an optical attenuation system developed for high-brightness laser projectors used in planetariums.
It continuously controls projected light while allowing the projector to remain in stable operation.
The Challenge: Balancing Video and Optical Stars
High-brightness projection raises the apparent background level of the dome through scattered and reflected light. At the same time, the viewer’s visual adaptation shifts toward the brighter projected image, making faint optical stars more difficult to perceive.
VEIL reduces the projected light to achieve a better balance between video imagery and the optical star field.
The goal is not maximum brightness. The goal is optimum balance.
Variable Optical Attenuation
VEIL provides continuously variable optical attenuation using two linear polarizers. By controlling their relative angle, the amount of projected light can be adjusted smoothly and repeatably.
Optical Blackout Without Cooling the Projector
VEIL can also block the projected light optically while the projector remains in operation.
This helps maintain the thermal stability of the projection system and reduces the risk of small image-position shifts that can affect alignment and edge blending in multi-projector installations.

Designed for Adaptation
The unit shown here is an early prototype.
The mechanical configuration, dimensions, mounting arrangement, and orientation can be adapted to suit different projector systems and installation environments.
VEIL is intended to be configured for the requirements of each installation rather than as a fixed, one-size-fits-all product.
